The Sixers showcased their dominance in a remarkable victory over their rivals, the Celtics, securing their sixth consecutive win.
First Quarter
The first quarter witnessed an intriguing defensive strategy by the Boston Celtics, with Jrue Holiday primarily defending Joel Embiid, who initially displayed an overaggressive approach. The quarter saw Robert Covington taking the floor, seemingly overtaking Jaden Springer in the rotation. However, Springer’s growing pains might better be managed with Covington currently in the rotation.
Second Quarter
The second quarter witnessed an impressive performance from the Sixers’ second unit, notably with Paul Reed contributing with offensive boards and sparking a 9-0 run. Tyrese Maxey also stood out with a chase-down block on Jrue Holiday. Nico Batum made significant contributions, both offensively and defensively, and despite a finger injury, he returned to the game.
The Celtics faced the challenge of guarding the Sixers’ wings, and Kristaps Porzingis emerged as a formidable matchup. Maxey had a strong quarter, showing excellent control of the pace and contributing 12 points in the second quarter, leading the Sixers to a seven-point halftime lead.
Third Quarter
The third quarter was marked by intermittent play, with both teams facing struggles. Embiid carried the Sixers through this quarter, being the only scorer for the first 10 minutes. The quarter was defined by defensive prowess, with the Sixers holding Boston scoreless for the final 3:25.
This was certainly a quarter for defense, with the Sixers only hitting 20 points for the quarter as time expired. Philly really closed it well, holding Boston scoreless for the last 3:25 of the quarter. Embiid had two of his four blocks during this stretch, as the Sixers took a 10-point lead into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
In the fourth quarter, Boston attempted a comeback while Embiid was on the bench, but Maxey’s floater provided the Sixers with an answer. The Sixers’ defense excelled, particularly with Embiid back on the floor, as they reestablished a double-digit lead.
In the final moments, the Sixers had a slight scare, allowing Boston to trim the lead to four. De’Anthony Melton’s performance raised questions about his role in closing games. Despite some anxious moments, the Sixers narrowly avoided a collapse.
The Sixers’ next challenge awaits in Detroit, where they will face the Pistons in in-season tournament action on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET.
