Barcelona lost 1-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany, Friday night, blowing a fantastic chance to advance to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

Barça knew going into the match that even a point would get them into the next round, but they played a dismal game from the beginning to the end, allowing Shakhtar to win with a well-earned victory.

The Blaugrana would have loved to reserve their spot in the knockout stages as soon as possible, even though it’s not the end of the trip considering how things have transpired over the last two seasons. The Catalans will now have to wait until later this month, when they play FC Porto, to do so.

With a few exceptions, virtually all of Barcelona’s stars found it difficult to leave the right impression against Shakhtar last night. The most underwhelming player of the evening, though, was Robert Lewandowski, who was unable to establish himself at all during the game.

Lewandowski actually had the fewest touches of any player who played ninety minutes—just twenty-nine—against Shakhtar. He touched every 3.1 minutes on average.

Furthermore, the veteran striker has not scored in any of his last six games for Barcelona in all competitions. This goal drought is the worst it has been since he played 10 games without scoring for Borussia Dortmund from December 2010 to February 2011.

In addition to Lewandowski, Joao Felix, another attacker for Barcelona who entered as a replacement in the second half, is also experiencing a severe goal drought.

In fact, the 23-year-old attacker on loan from Barcelona hasn’t scored in his last ten games for the giants in La Liga.

Barça’s performance in the first half of the match was so bad that they did not manage to get a single shot on goal.

In fact, this was the ninth occasion in all competitions that Barcelona had failed to score a goal in the first half of a game since Xavi’s arrival.

In the end, the Blaugrana managed to end the game with just one shot on goal.

Xavi has been in charge of Barcelona for two years, but he hasn’t figured out the European fixtures system yet.

Ultimately, throughout his 20 games in command in European competitions, Ba
