UPDATE: Spain coach removed Barcelona midfielder from squad for Euro qualifiers

The midfield phenom Pedri made his comeback to action for Barcelona this past Saturday night in the 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad. Pedri had been sidelined for more than two months because of an injury.

The young Spanish phenom has had a lot of injury difficulties in his brief career at the highest level. As a result, the Catalans did not take any chances with his recuperation and only welcomed him back after the midfielder felt that he was ready to play at his full potential.

On Saturday when the club was playing Sociedad, Pedri came in as a replacement, and nearly as soon as he entered the game, there was a noticeable increase in the level of excitement.

Given the length of time he has been on the bench, however, his game time in the coming weeks will be managed with prudence due to the fact that he has been sitting on the bench for so long.

A call-up for Spain is highly unlikely.

As a result of this, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente is not expected to call on Pedri for La Roja’s upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Cyprus and Georgia, according to a report by Jordi Gil of SPORT.

On Friday, Luis de la Fuente will make the announcement regarding the roster for the final international window of 2023.

In the last two games of their Euro 2024 qualification campaign, which they do not need to win to make it to the tournament, Spain will play Cyprus in Limassol on November 16 and will play Georgia in Valladolid on November 18. Both of these games will take place after Spain has already qualified for the tournament.

Since taking over for Luis Enrique as the manager of Spain, De la Fuente has not been able to rely on Pedri’s support in any capacity. Because of injuries, he was unable to call up a player that he believes would be essential to La Roja’s chances of winning the European Championship in Germany in the following year.

Pedri has been given the all-clear from the team’s medical staff, and he participated in some of the game against Real Sociedad. He is now eligible for recall. However, De la Fuente plans to approach the player with caution in this situation.

According to the source, De la Fuente has been inquiring frequently about Pedri’s health over the weeks that the latter has been sidelined from competition.

His goal is to provide the player with safety and he will in no way attempt to coerce the athlete in any way. His return to the field of play at Anoeta brought the coach a great deal of satisfaction. The coach will also be keeping a close eye on Tuesday’s game against Shakhtar, in which Pedri may get more playing time.

After that, he will decide whether Pedri is ready to be called up or whether he would prefer the midfielder to remain in Barcelona to continue working with Xavi Hernandez’s staff and improve his physical condition. Until then, he will not make a decision.

The remainder of the month of November and the first week of December will be challenging for Barcelona, so Xavi will need a significantly enhanced version of Pedri by then.

In this regard, Xavi and De la Fuente are complementary to one another. The head coach of Spain does not have an urgent requirement for Pedri for the upcoming matches against Georgia and Cyprus.

The top seed in the draw for Euro 2024, which will take place in Hamburg on December 2nd, will be at risk; nevertheless, this is a secondary objective in comparison to the significance of having Pedri play at full strength.
