Steph Curry unable to carry Warriors past Cavaliers in 115-104 loss

The Warriors defeated 115-104 against the Cavaliers on Sunday. The Warriors fell to 5-2 on the season with their first road loss. The Nuggets lead the Western Conference by 1.5 games over the Dubs.

Golden State’s bench has been strong early on, but the Splash Brothers and Draymond Green prevented a first-half blowout win. Cavaliers length hindered Warriors offense all night, limiting every player but Steph Curry to below-average shooting.

Curry led the Warriors with 28 points, nailing seven of 11 three-pointers. Steph still struggled against Cleveland’s excellent defense, committing six turnovers and making only one shot inside the arc.

Cleveland’s length didn’t stop the Warriors from attacking the hoop. Golden State kept the game alive by drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line despite a 35.8% shooting percentage. The Warriors made 20 of 30 free throws on Sunday.

Rookie center Trayce Jackson-Davis and third-year wing Jonathan Kuminga supplied second-half sparks off the bench. Jackson-Davis was a Warriors high +8 in 11 minutes and is making a strong case to be a staple in Steve Kerr’s rotation.

The Warriors kept the Cavs close for three quarters and got within five and six points multiple times in the fourth. However, Golden State failed to score that extra run to tie or lead. Instead, Cavs All-Star guards Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell always made a major play to cut Warriors momentum.

Tomorrow night, the Dubs play the Detroit Pistons in the second half of a back-to-back. Opening tip-off is 4:00 PM Pacific.
