Since taking Aaron Ramsdale’s spot as the Gunners’ starting keeper this season, Raya has committed a number of grave errors.

The 28-year-old Spanish player, who was on a season-long loan from Brentford to Arsenal this summer, struggled once more in Eddie Howe’s team’s defeat.

Carragher has now turned his attention to fellow “keeper Raya,” despite having already informed Ramsdale that he had no future at the team and instructed him to depart in January.

After the game at St. James’ Park, Carragher commented on Sky Sports, referring to the contentious winner Anthony Gordon, “let’s not get lost in all the VAR stuff.”

“David Raya, the goalkeeper for Arsenal, has made another error, and Mikel Arteta is now facing a serious issue.”

This is a serious issue. He committed the same error once more, just as he did at Chelsea a few weeks prior, and escaped punishment. Here, he hasn’t gotten away with it.

‘Look at where he is initially, when the shot comes in initially he’s outside his near post.

‘The ball flies across the other side and keep an eye on him: he tells his players to get out, he’s wanting the ball to be called out of play and then he just keeps edging and edging forward.

‘And when that ball leaves Joe Willock’s foot, again, he – the goalkeeper – is outside his near post.

‘Now this a recurring theme with this goalkeeper a lot. He finds himself where he’s out of position and he can’t then reach the ball.

‘And I actually think it then has a knock-on effect when you’re talking about the foul, because I think Gabriel Magalhaes is actually stooping because he thinks the ball might evade the keeper and he might have to [head it clear].’

Arsenal paid Brentford £3m to secure the loan deal for Raya and have the option to sign him permanently for an extra £27m at the end of the season.
