The reason VAR decided to uphold Anthony Gordon’s contentious goal during Newcastle United’s victory over Arsenal on Saturday has been made public.
When Gordon scrambled the ball over the line at St. James’ Park in the 64th minute, VAR officials looked for three distinct infractions: if the ball went out of play during the build-up, whether Joelinton fouled Gabriel Magalhaes, and whether Gordon was offside.
The goal was declared valid after a lengthy review that lasted more than four minutes. According to Sky Sports, there was “no available angle to see the point of contact” regarding Gordon’s potential offside, which infuriated the Gunners.
While providing analysis, Gary Neville stated, “It’s whether this goes out,” as Newcastle managed to win 1-0. “It is near.” quite close. There is no question about the objective. David Raya manages to screw everything up.
Joelinton is putting pressure on Gabriel. It’s a close call [ball going out of play]. I’m not sure how you could even check the ball’s curve. The white line and the ball are unquestionably separated by a gap.
Gabriel is complaining about being shoved. That one doesn’t seem to contain anything. I don’t think that’s a free-kick. Gabriel bent over to attempt turning it on.
“I don’t believe that to be a foul.” Gabriel makes an attempt to head the ball but fails. Joelinton’s jump from the ball is instinctive. That one, I’m not having at all.
The goal was given after a lengthy VAR check
‘Offside check? Just let me know when they’re finished! I’m done. I’m finished! It might be offside now… there you go. Oh, I am not sure. I haven’t got a clue.
‘The VAR official at Stockley Park has asked for extra time [to make a decision]. Goal given. The VAR official says there was no evidence that was conclusive they could cancel the goal.’
Arsenal’s defeat means that their unbeaten start to the Premier League has come to an end and they remain in third behind Tottenham and Manchester City.
