Miami has a new culture leader.

According to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, defensive anchor and All-Star center Bam Adebayo was named team captain Wednesday after Udonis Haslem retired.

The title has been held internally by Adebayo since Haslem, a 20-year Heat player, gave him a jersey with his number 13 and a “C” on the front before a preseason session.

A true passing of the torch from his mentor since arriving in Dade County seven years ago.

I guess the only change is formal,” Adebayo stated. “It felt unwritten. It’s stamped. It’s full with responsibility and possibility. As captain, leading our team over this Һump and to a championship is my biggest goal.”

After Haslem announced his retirement before the 2022-23 season, the team expected it.

Adebayo, like Haslem, has become a Heat Culture icon.

“Even early at this stage in his career, Bam has put so much into the organization and the culture and he’s been mentored by the best mentor in UD,” Erik Spoelstra said. Haslem has been training him for this for two or three years [with this in mind]. That moment was special.”

After being drafted No. 13 overall in 2017 from Kentucky, Adebayo spent his first two years as Hassan Whiteside’s backup before becoming a top-five center in the NBA.

He’s been vital to Miami’s four-year success, including two Finals appearances. He’s the Heat’s longest-tenured player and will be expected to follow in the organization’s largest leadership role.

He takes his role seriously.

“It was a surreal moment because I remember walking into this situation just trying to get in where I could fit in,” said Adebayo. “Now, the coaching staff, [Haslem], and organization look at me in Year 7 like I’ll continue this torch. A true blessing. It’s full with possibility and responsibility. Like UD, I want to carry the flame well.”

Two-time All-Star and perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate Adebayo has had another strong start to the season, averaging 22.7 points, six rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.3 blocks.
