Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle: Erik ten Hag confronts more questions after Diogo Dalot and Antony’s disastrous Carabao Cup defeat

Manchester United’s poor start to the season continues with a second straight 3-0 home loss.

Manchester United’s Carabao Cup defence ended in humiliation on Wednesday with a 3-0 home loss to Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s team avenged last season’s final loss and put additional pressure on Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.

Ten Hag made seven changes from Sunday’s loss to Manchester City, but his newcomers failed to perform, and Miguel Almiron scored midway through the first half after Tino Livramento had carried the ball 50 yards.

Ten Hag made two half-time substitutes after Lewis Hall volleyed in from the edge of the box after a cross was cleared into his path to put the Magpies ahead 2-0. That seemed to spark the Red Devils, but Joe Willock scored a great finish on the hour.

Andre Onana Manchester United 2023-24

Goalkeeper & Defence

Andre Onana (6/10):

None of the goals were my fault. He played when he could.

Diogo Dalot (2/10):

Caught sleeping as Almiron snuck in behind him for the first goal, then misplaced the ball in dаnger for the second. Good halftime hook.

Victor Lindelof (5/10):

Not always careful, but others were more responsible for this recent disаster.

Harry Maguire (5/10):

Newcastle scored second when weak clearing header dropped to Hall. Would try to advance the ball forward when in possession, but sometimes failed.

Sergio Reguilon (5/10):

Lost possession for the first goal and provided little going forward.

Mason Mount Manchester United 2023-24

Midfield

Hannibal Mejbri (4/10):

Can’t blame his effort, but lets his ambition get the best of him. Lucky not to be sent off in 20 minutes and must prevent carelessness.

Casemiro (3/10):

He appeared sluggish after returning from ιnjury. Booked early before being substituted at halftime.

Mason Mount (4/10):

Not incisive enough in possession and too easily beаt by Livramento before the first goal. He had a few good moments in the last third, but not enough for United’s fee.

Alejandro Garnacho Manchester United 2023-24

аttаck

Antony (2/10):

He wasted good right-wing positions and gave the ball away practically every time. Dalot’s defense suffered too.

Anthony Martial (4/10):

Early pressure, but not enough ball movement. Almost ducking under a cross when testing Dubravka.

Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):

Though dazzling, lost to Livramento too often to accomplish anything noteworthy.

Subs & Manager

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (6/10):

Returned from ιnjury at halftime and held up well.

Sofyan Amrabat (4/10):

Only slightly better than Casemiro in midfield. Late booking.

Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Was substituted with the score 3-0 and failed to produce.

Rasmus Hojlund (6/10):

He didn’t get the service he needed to get his side back in it.

Bruno Fernandes (4/10):

Ignored United’s greatest chance and didn’t seem focused on the pitch.

Erik ten Hag (2/10):

Given league form and the necessity to rest his regulars, he was right to rotate, but his inability to motivate his peripheral players was telling. The United job is slipping from him.
