Kings win 132-127: LeBron James and Lakers fall to Kings in overtime amid continued tinkering

Both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings, who play in the same division, set out to improve to 2-1 on Sunday night.

Though overtime was needed, it was a back-and-forth game that saw the Kings win 132-127 in the end.

The Lakers started the game with a 7-3 lead after committing a few careless turnovers. Taurean Prince scored the team’s opening basket.

Anthony Davis helped the Lakers get comfortable with two blocks before he scored a putback layup. But the Lakers have never been good in transition, and they were behind early in this game as the Kings led 18 to 9.

After a timeout, the Lakers answered with a 6-0 run, but they were unable to prevent the Kings from getting inside the 3-point arc early. The home audience was then electrified by a poster dunk by former Laker JaVale McGee, which put the Kings ahead 41-28 at the half.

Early in the second, Christian Wood got off to a quick start with back-to-back threes, but it didn’t have much of an impact because the Lakers’ defense was still unrelenting.

The Kings eventually began to cool off from deep, though, and the Lakers began to make inroads. As his early-season problems persisted, Austin Reaves had several open opportunities but was unable to convert them; however, Davis made up for it by continuing to dominate in all areas for Los Angeles.

The Lakers cut their deficit to four points at one time, but they were behind 66-55 heading into the locker room after a terrible finish that saw De’Aaron Fox score five straight points.

The Lakers started the half on a 6-2 run, forcing a Sacramento timeout, after the Kings committed four team fouls in the first two minutes of the third quarter. As a result, the Lakers remained in the bonus the entire time. But they came back strong, nailing two triples to extend their lead to double figures.

This season, Prince has proven to be a valuable addition for the Lakers. In the third quarter, he led a run, found Davis for a slam, and then sank back-to-back three-pointers.

The Lakers trailed 87-83 going into the fourth quarter, unable to overcome their early deficit despite Sabonis and Fox picking up their fourth fouls and spending the entirety of the third quarter on the bench.

Rui Hachimura eventually got hot after a sluggish start to the season, making two 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to give the Lakers their first lead. They grew to a five-point lead until Fox came back to finish a crucial three-point play for his side.

After rolling his ankle, Fox had to return to the locker room for a minute. When he did, he quickly drilled a triple to match James’s from the previous possession.

The Lakers lost six late in the game after missing seven straight baskets, and LeBron broke the drought with a slam.

After a putback dunk by Davis in the closing minute, Gabe Vincent foolishly fouled Fox, forcing him to shoot two free throws to tie the game. With 13 seconds remaining, Keegan Murray missed a three-point shot to send the game into overtime, and James drove to the rim for an easy layup, tying the score once more.

Malik Monk gave Sacramento an early four-point lead in overtime after having a comparatively quiet evening. He scored nine points in a row. In the last minute, Kevin Huerter made a huge 3-pointer to give his team a five-point lead again, despite James scoring five points. The Lakers were unable to rally, and that proved to be sufficient to end it.
