Only appearing in 6 matches, Lionel Messi caused fierce controversy at the award nominations in the US

Messi was recognized as a candidate for two prestigious individual awards in this competition, despite the fact that he participated in only six matches for Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

The summer of 2023 saw Messi begin his career at Inter Miami. This player left a significant impact, which was essential in the Florida state club’s title run in the Leagues Cup. However, because of injuries, Messi was unable to make a substantial contribution to Inter Miami by the end of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

According to the statistics, the Argentine superstar only participated in six games, with a total playing time of 373 minutes (two of which were spent on the bench). This man not only scored one goal but also provided two assists on the winning goal. Due to Messi’s injury near the close of the season, Inter Miami was unable to accomplish its primary objective, which was to secure a spot in the play-off group and fight for the championship.

Even so, Messi was still considered a candidate for two MLS awards: MLS’s Best Player and MLS’s Most Impressive Rookie. Despite all of this, Messi won both awards. Even as recently as yesterday, the Organizing Committee made the announcement that Messi would be one of the finalists for the award for Most Impressive Rookie.

Giorgios Giakoumakis, who plays for Atlanta United, and Eduard Lowen, who plays for Saint Louis City, are two additional players on this list. Even taking into account the projections, Messi’s likelihood of taking home the trophy is extremely high.

Many fans were left feeling dissatisfied after seeing that El Pulga had been nominated despite making only a few appearances. They claim that the MLS Organizing Committee has an unhealthy obsession with Messi and that they want to capitalize on the player’s notoriety in order to spruce up the competition. Instead, the Argentine superstar did not merit consideration for the award due to the achievements he made to the MLS.

The candidacy of Messi was seen by many as nothing more than a ludicrous prank, and many individuals did their best to mock it. Some people have even requested that accolades such as the Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, and Grammy be bestowed upon El Pulga.

Messi was not selected for the final round of voting for the MLS Best Player award. Thiago Almada (Atlanta United), Luciano Acosta (Cincinnati), and Dennis Bouanga (Los Angeles) are the three players who are in the running for the honor. Along with Duncan McGuire (Orlando City) and Aidan Morris (Columbus Crew), Thiago Almada made it to the top 3 shortlisted nominations for the Best Young Player award. Among these players, Thiago Almada was one of them.
