After leaving Manchester United in the summer, David de Gea is currently a free agent, and the Red Devils are mulling over the possibility of signing the goalkeeper to return to Old Trafford.
After leaving the club because his contract had ended, David de Gea has been gone for little than half a year, but Manchester United is thinking about bringing him back on a temporary basis.
De Gea, who was 32 years old when he departed the Red Devils in the summer, played for the club for a total of 545 games during his illustrious 12-year tenure at Old Trafford. The Spanish goalie is an important character in the locker room, and several players for Manchester United are dissatisfied with the goalkeeper’s actions.
However, not too long ago, Manchester United were given a hard blow when Onana overturned his decision to retire from international football. This decision had been made not too long before. The 27-year-old player announced his decision just before Cameroon’s qualifying match against Burundi for the Africa Cup of Nations in September. He gave the reason for his decision as “unshakeable love and attachment to his homeland.”
If Onana is picked for the Cameroon team that will compete in CAN 2024, he will likely miss up to eight matches for Manchester United. One of those matches will be the Premier League encounter against Tottenham. According to the publication Mirror, the leadership of Manchester United is reportedly contemplating seriously considering recruiting a goalkeeper to replace Onana in January of the next year, and De Gea is one of the choices that is being explored.
After moving to Manchester United in the summer for a fee of £47.2 million from Inter Milan, the formerly of Ajax player got off to a rough start in his new role. On the other hand, he also delivered a moment of magic in the Champions League on Tuesday, when he saved a penalty kick in the second half of the victory over Copenhagen.
Despite making a heartfelt statement in July that he would be leaving Manchester United, Onana’s predecessor has not yet signed with any club. It was claimed earlier this month that De Gea was seriously contemplating hanging up his gloves if he did not receive a contract to play goalie for a prestigious club.
Although De Gea has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and has already turned down several bids during the summer transfer window, he is still waiting to see if another offer comes along that is more acceptable for him. Incredibly, The Sun reports that Manchester United have urged De Gea to hold off on signing with another club until they have worked out the details of Onana’s transfer.
It is unknown whether De Gea desires to come back to Old Trafford, particularly if he will be required to play the number two position when Onana returns from Canada. This season, Onana has started all 13 matches that Manchester United has played so far, during which they have given up 20 goals and kept four clean sheets.
In the meantime, De Gea was able to earn the Premier League Golden Glove award by making an incredible 17 saves across 38 appearances in the previous season. However, he was unable to come to a new agreement with Manchester United, and as a result, Ten Hag chose to sign Onana.
