BREAKING: Santi Aldama will miss tomorrow’s Grizzlies season opener against the Pelicans due to a foot injury

The Memphis Grizzlies’ frontcourt depth has taken another blow.

Forward Santi Aldama will be out for the season opener against the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday (7 p.m., Bally Sports Southeast) at FedExForum due to a right ankle sprain. The ankle sprain is considered mild, and the Grizzlies are listing him as day-to-day.

Aldama is expected to play a lot of minutes this season alongside Jaren Jackson Jr. and be a prominent member in the frontcourt rotation. This puts Xavier Tillman Sr. in line to start against the Pelicans.

Aldama joins Brandon Clarke and Steven Adams as players who would likely be in the big man rotation if they were healthy. The Grizzlies announced two days ago that Adams would miss the entire season due to knee surgery on his right PCL.

Along with Jackson and Tillman, Kenneth Lofton Jr. is in line to receive more minutes. Lofton scored 42 points in his lone start with the Grizzlies in the final regular season game of last season, but Memphis wants to see him improve as a defender.

Another option the Grizzlies will explore is playing more of a small-ball lineup. David Roddy has spent most of his time at small forward, but he saw limited action in the preseason at power forward.
