NBA opening night live updates: Highlights, analysis from Lakers-Nuggets, Suns-Warriors

LeBron James made a grand entrance to kick off his 21st NBA season. 

James arrived at Ball Arena Tuesday night wearing an expensive Louis Vuitton ensemble before of the Lakers’ season-opening game versus the Nuggets.

For its inaugural night on TNT, the NBA arranged a star-studded doubleheader treat: the Phoenix Suns versus the Golden State Warriors (10 p.m. ET) and the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Denver Nuggets (7:30 p.m. ET).

The Nuggets will receive their title rings prior to the game. The opening game is a replay of the 4-0 Nuggets sweep of the Western Conference finals from the previous season. There are twelve more games on Wednesday, with the San Antonio Spurs playing the Dallas Mavericks in rookie Victor Wembanyama’s first regular-season game.

The Lakers meet the Suns in another West matchup on Thursday, while the Milwaukee Bucks and their deadly Giannis Antetokounmpo-Damian Lillard combination take on the Philadelphia 76ers.

Lakers 80, Nuggets 87: Los Angeles narrows the gap in the third quarter.

Los Angeles Lakers, who had fallen down by as much as eighteen points at one point in the third quarter, cut Denver’s lead to two possessions and were down just 87-80 going into the fourth.

Nikola Jokic of Denver has demonstrated his worth as the top player on USA TODAY Sports’ list of the top 30 NBA players with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jamal Murray both have 16 points.

With a 9-0 run, the Lakers concluded the third quarter. LeBron James only made one basket and Anthony Davis was scoreless in the third quarter, but the Lakers were still able to maintain a manageable lead thanks to seven points apiece from D’Angelo Russell and Taurean Prince.
