Heading into his fourth year as a Laker, Anthony Davis is already a Lakers legend according to LeBron James.
The anticipation of what Anthony Davis can be for the Lakers this year is the highest since his first season in Los Angeles. Darvin Ham has discussed wanting to see Davis shooting more from deep, Austin Reaves has sung his praises as a passer and James has already mentioned him as a leader of this team.
On Saturday, LeBron James once again showered Davis with compliments.
“AD is great. AD is amazing.” James said. “We’re co-captains, and he’s just as much a leader of this team as I am. He’s everything that this franchise could ever want and more; he’s one of the greatest bigs to play for this franchise for sure.”
This may seem like a huge statement for an organization that has bigs like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, Pau Gasol and Wilt Chamberlain donning the purple and gold, but when you take a step back, it’s hard to argue against this claim.
Davis has already won a title with the Lakers as the second-best player like Gasol, he’s a top-75 player just like Chamberlain and if Darvin Ham’s implementation of the five-out offense can unlock the best version of Davis, he can be even more dominant which is a scary thought for the rest of the league.
Having your two best players on the same page and ready to play to start the season is exactly what fans want to see and hear. We know the Davis/James combo can win it all and contend in a competitive Western Conference, but it don’t mean a thing if they don’t win a ring. In Los Angeles, that’s all that matters.
Perhaps James is correct and Davis will have the same acclaim, praise and reverence as the Lakers bigs of yore, but if he can win another title and break the tie the Lakers currently have with their rivals, the Boston Celtics, he will undoubtedly be in the conversation as one of the greatest bigs and the only question will be when not if his jersey will hang in the rafters of Crypto.com Arena
