Though they were unimpressive for the majority of a hard-fought match against Burnley, who will feel unfortunate to lose by a single goal, Manchester United has stemmed the rot.
Burnley had more shots, corners, and possession of the ball, but shortly before halftime, Jonny Evans floated a gorgeous long pass over the defense, and Bruno Fernandes finished with a volley of unmatched skill to give United the only real moment of the match.
The veteran Evans had earlier put the ball in the Burnley net from a corner, but Var rightly ruled it out for a block on the goalkeeper. Evans is back in the lineup as United deals with a back injury issue.
Zeki Amdouni, a 22-year-old Swiss player, was passed through by Aaron Ramsey, bringing Burnley the closest, but he struck the post. Throughout, they applied constant pressure to the United defense.
United put forth a lackluster performance overall, although Eric ten Hag praised “the team spirit” displayed in the close victory. Burnley, who has just one point from five games and is currently at the bottom of the emerging table, was left to lament a lost chance to take a significant victory.
