Xabi Alonso Reportedly Holds a Contract Clause Allowing Him to Assume the Liverpool Managerial Role Next Summer

Xabi Alonso, a beloved figure among many Liverpool fans, is rumored to have a contractual provision that could pave the way for him to become Liverpool’s manager in the upcoming summer. The 41-year-old is a front-runner for the role of succeeding Jurgen Klopp, should the German decide to step down from the club. However, Alonso is also highly regarded at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, two clubs where he enjoyed successful spells during his illustrious playing career.

As reported by German publication BILD, Alonso’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen, where he is currently employed as a manager, extends until 2026. Nevertheless, the contract is believed to contain a clause that permits him to join any of the three European football powerhouses he played for during his career, possibly as early as the next summer.

The Spaniard (on the left) is a frontrunner at Liverpool to take over from Jurgen Klopp when the German manager departs. However, despite the clause in his contract, Klopp is expected to remain at Liverpool next season, with his own contract extending until 2026, marking over a decade of service at the club. The managerial position at Anfield is notably more secure than those at Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.

Thomas Tuchel has only been in charge at Bayern since March, and reports from last month suggested that he had received warnings from Bayern bosses regarding his perceived “erratic” behavior during the summer transfer window.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, is actively seeking a new manager, as Carlo Ancelotti is set to depart after his contract expires next summer. According to recent reports, Xabi Alonso is a top choice on Real Madrid’s managerial wishlist, and he also holds a prominent place on Liverpool’s list of potential coaches once Jurgen Klopp’s tenure concludes. Bayern Munich might also consider Alonso should Thomas Tuchel’s performance at the Bundesliga club not meet expectations.
