Austin Reaves, who stood out as a star for Team USA during the FIBA World Cup earlier this summer, is aware that his chances of making the team for the 2024 Paris Olympics are quite slim.
Despite being one of the most consistent players for Team USA, their disappointing 4th place finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup led to numerous NBA stars, including his Los Angeles Lakers teammate LeBron James, expressing their desire to play in the 2024 Olympics. The list of potential players also includes luminaries like Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, and several other elite talents. With such fierce competition for spots, Reaves understands that his chances are limited.
When asked about the prospect of playing in Paris, Reaves stated, “Obviously, if I get the opportunity, great. I understand the caliber of guys that want to play in the Olympics. If I get that call to play, I’ll be the first one to say yes. I’m not realistic of myself sometimes,” as reported by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Team USA will have to choose twelve players to compete at the Paris Olympic Games next year, and there are well over 12 NBA players who have expressed their interest in joining the team. It promises to be a highly competitive selection process.
During the FIBA World Cup, Austin Reaves averaged 21.8 minutes and 13.8 points per game in eight games. While Team USA fell short in the semifinals against Team Germany, the experience was invaluable for Reaves as he enters his third full year with the Lakers.
