PSG and Kylian Mbappé humbled by Newcastle United in Champions League

Newcastle United handed Paris Saint-Germain and Kylian Mbappé a humiliating 4-1 loss on Wednesday in the Champions League group stages.

Newcastle led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Dan Burn and Miguel Almirón. Early in the second half, Gianluigi Donnarumma of PSG failed to stop Sean Longstaff’s strong angled shot, giving Newcastle an additional lead.

PSG’s Lucas Hernández pulled one back, but Fabian Schär’s incredible shot put Newcastle back up by three goals.

Newcastle now leads Group F with four points, one more than PSG, after the victory. The other match in the “Group of Death” ended in a goalless draw between AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

PSG boss Luis Enrique told TNT Sports, “It was a difficult night and I don’t think we deserved that kind of result.” “It is difficult to admit that we made some mistakes and that they were effective in the final portion of the pitch. You pay the price for your mistakes. The loss coincides with ongoing speculations of Mbappé’s dissatisfaction at PSG and his potential departure for Real Madrid, one of the biggest teams in Spain.

The 24-year-old French international has been linked to the La Liga team every year, and since he is hesitant to sign a contract extension in Paris, there are continual rumors that the transfer would happen eventually.PSG has had a slow start to the 2023–24 season under new head coach Enrique amid all of the rumors.

It was thought that Mbappé would have more flexibility and the team would have new vitality after Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. left. However, young talent also arrived, and these players left.

Even though they are only two points behind leader Monaco in the French league after seven games, PSG is currently ranked fifth. However, Wednesday’s humiliating loss to Newcastle serves as another proof that the team is still far from reaching their goal of winning the Champions League.

After purchasing PSG in 2011, Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) poured money on bringing some of the best players in the world to Paris, making a Champions League victory appear certain.

But even after spending well over a billion dollars and 12 years, the club is still far from reaching its desired level of success.

Mbappé had minimal impact on the match at St. James’ Park in Newcastle, as the Premier League team outclassed their French opponents in terms of physical strength.
