When the final buzzer of the Golden State Warriors’ NBA Finals victory against the Boston Celtics rang on Thursday night, an emotional Stephen Curry found himself in his father Dell’s arms. He was equally fatigued, overwhelmed, and relieved.
After leading his team in scoring with 34 points and nearly winning MVP of the Finals in the 103-90 victory over the Lakers in Game 6, Curry managed to briefly escape the chaos, even though all eyes in Boston’s TD Garden were focused on the future Hall of Famer.
Curry, 34, admitted to reporters, “I blacked out for a second.”
With his cigar in hand and ready for his son’s fourth NBA victory, the senior Curry was easily spotted along the baseline among a sea of green-clad Celtics supporters.
“You know, to be honest with you, I had no idea he was down there on the floor,” Curry claimed. “I lost it when I saw him, and I knew there wasn’t much time left.” It was so special that all I wanted to do was savor the moment.
Curry had experienced these kinds of embraces before, as the devoted son and then as an NBA champion. Curry had grown up watching Dell play for the Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors.
For Curry, though, the last few seconds of Thursday’s Game 6 felt different after two underwhelming seasons.
Following Kevin Durant’s free agent departure to Brooklyn in 2019 and Klay Thompson’s two-season absence due to two potentially career-ending injuries, many believed the Warriors dynasty had come to an end. Prior to the 2021 postseason, Golden State was ousted in the play-in tournament after finishing in the bottom half of the NBA in 2020.
Curry’s fourth league championship and first Finals MVP honor solidified his status as one of the game’s most tenacious winners, even though his prior three victories indicated he was a Hall of Famer. While head coach Steve Kerr described the 2022 Finals as Curry’s “crowning achievement,” longtime teammate Andre Iguodala stated Curry has proven he’s the “best point guard of all time.”It has been a year and six days since I began the process of getting ready for this season, Curry said to reporters, speaking only for myself and my workouts from the off-season the previous year when we lost in the play-in round. “It all worked out.” didn’t know how it would transpire. was unsure of the surroundings that would be present. You anticipate certain feelings, yet they arrive in a different form.
For those who are not acquainted with Curry or his large NBA family, his basketball career has been unlike any other.
Curry was born in the same hospital in Akron, Ohio, four years after LeBron James, the beloved son of the community. In 1988, Dell was a sharpshooter for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he later became well-known for the Hornets and contributed to the spread of the 3-point shot in the NBA.
Dell eventually called it quits in Toronto, where his younger brother Seth and father, Stephen Curry, could frequently be seen hoisting up shots at the Air Canada Centre.
