Arsenal is one of the teams apparently interested in signing New England Revolution star Noel Buck, according to Tom Bogert of The Athletic.
The 18-year-old is also being watched by a number of Bundesliga teams, Burnley, and Manchester City.
With 24 appearances in the competition and three goals and one assist, Buck was the MLS’s breakout star the previous season. The adaptable midfield player made an impression with the technical prowess and maturity of his performances.
It’s unclear if he’s prepared to play in the Premier League, but he undoubtedly has a lot of promise.
Buck a smart punt with business considerations in mind
In recent years, Arsenal has also made extensive use of the North American market. The Gunners were able to sell MLS acquisitions Matt Turner and Auston Trusty to other Premier League teams for payments of £7 million and £5 million, respectively, during the most recent summer transfer window, despite their poor success on the field with this tactic.
Given his history, Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu might think that, if Buck can be acquired at a reasonable price, it is worth taking a chance on him. If the player doesn’t perform up to par at the Emirates Stadium, they will be assured that they can at least recover their original investment in him.
From a more pessimistic angle, the commercial rationale driving this purchase would also realize that adding Buck would increase interest in and awareness of Arsenal in the United States.
The teenager, whose father is from Massachusetts, is also qualified to represent England. The Three Lions have given him three caps at the under-19 level. That does not imply that Buck will dedicate his entire senior international career to England, though.
