Sheikh Jassim, a bidder for Manchester United, has been in discussions to acquire ownership of another team.
After making inquiries about acquiring control of Champions League finalists Inter Milan, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, the bidder for Manchester United, saw his attempts to arrange another takeover agreement collapse. According to reports, the Qatari billionaire has been holding talks to consider buying another team because there are questions over whether the Glazer family would approve of his £5 billion offer to buy the team.
Sheikh Jassim reportedly wants to buy Inter, who lost 1-0 to Manchester City in the Champions League final but qualified for the competition this season by placing third in Serie A, if he loses to Sir Jim Ratcliffe for ownership of the Premier League.
According to a report from the Italian publication Tuttomercatoweb, Sheikh Jassim’s United bid has taken a “step backwards.” Ratcliffe’s offer of a 25% minority interest is ‘closer than ever’ for the Glazers to accept, which has compelled the Qatari financier to look at other teams as a backup plan. Among his choices is the financially struggling Inter.
According to reports, Sheikh Jassim’s interest coincided with Inter’s hunt for fresh investment, as he serves as president of the Qatar Islamic Bank and several other prominent transport businesses. They’re on the market for a new sponsor right now, and because Qatar Airways is about to sign a £1 million jersey sponsorship agreement, he would be a good fit to take over and mend fences.
