Barcelona midfield superstar Frenkie de Jong will be completing three weeks of his recovery in the next few days from the ankle injury he suffered last month.

The Netherlands international sustained the injury during the game against Celta Vigo on September 23, following which it was reported that he could be out for a period of five to seven weeks.

It meant that the 26-year-old was effectively ruled out of the blockbuster clash against Real Madrid on October 28 at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.

Xavi wants De Jong for El Clasico

But, as per a fresh report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez wants to have Frenkie de Jong available for the first El Clasico of the season against Real Madrid.

As has already been reported, Xavi believes that the absences of Pedri and De Jong have affected Barça’s performances in recent matches.

Pedri is on the verge of returning from his injury layoff and all signs point towards him being back well in time to face Real Madrid.

Now, Xavi is hoping that De Jong, too, is able to make a comeback for the Clasico as he sees the 26-year-old as a key cog and considering the magnitude of the game which could have title repercussions.

No risks will be taken

While Xavi would ideally want to have De Jong at his disposal for the match against Real Madrid, he would count on him only if there are no risks with his injury.

Next Monday, De Jong’s ankle brace will be removed and following that, a call on his availability for the Clasico will be taken based on his evolution and the player’s feelings.

De Jong does not wish to risk anything and neither does Xavi, and so it remains to be seen if the midfielder recovers completely in time for the game against Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
