Gary Neville: Liverpool Could Be Title Contenders with Arsenal’s Declan Rice in Midfield
During The Gary Neville Podcast, Gary Neville expressed his belief that Liverpool would be strong contenders for the Premier League title this season if they had a particular Arsenal player in their squad.
Neville’s comments came after Arsenal’s impressive 1-0 victory over Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium, which made a significant statement in the Premier League title race.
Declan Rice stood out for Mikel Arteta’s team, displaying dominance in the midfield as the two top teams engaged in a tactical battle.
Rice, who joined Arsenal for a club-record fee in the summer, has been under scrutiny, but he has excelled this season, with his performance overshadowing discussions about his transfer fee.
Liverpool has enjoyed a promising start to the campaign and appears to be back in contention for the title. However, Neville pointed out a potential weakness in the midfield.
“They could, they’re more likely to than Spurs, no doubt about that,” Neville said on The Gary Neville Podcast. “I think Liverpool have got something about them. Today they were playing against a really good Brighton side. They’ve got an outstanding goalkeeper, Liverpool, that I always think will keep them in a lot of football matches. And they’ve got a striker who can score goals, and lots of them. They’ve got a good forward line.”
Neville raised concerns about Liverpool’s midfield, questioning whether it possesses the defensive stability seen in other top teams. He suggested that adding a player like Declan Rice to Liverpool’s midfield could significantly enhance their title prospects.
Liverpool did not address their holding midfield issues in the summer transfer window, and Neville pointed out that they may need to address this vulnerability to compete effectively throughout the season.
Neville’s assessment highlights the potential impact a player like Declan Rice could have on Liverpool’s midfield and their overall title aspirations.
