Rasmus Hojlund scored for Manchester United against Galatasaray in the Champions League, a feat that saw him emulate Erling Haaland’s 2019 record.
Hojlund found the back of the net in the 17th minute of the match, combining effectively with Marcus Rashford to give Manchester United the lead. He then scored again in the 67th minute to restore the lead after Wilfred Zaha had equalized. Despite Hojlund’s efforts, Manchester United suffered a 3-2 loss to Galatasaray on the night. Hojlund has now scored three goals in his first two Champions League appearances, with his maiden strike coming against Bayern Munich on matchday one.
With this goal, Hojlund became the youngest player to score in his first two Champions League appearances since Erling Haaland did so in 2019 at the age of 19 years and 73 days.
In 2019, Haaland made his Champions League group stage debut for Borussia Dortmund against KRC Genk, announcing his arrival on the European stage with a hat-trick. He continued to impress by scoring against Liverpool at Anfield in his second match. Since then, Haaland has established himself as one of the most lethal strikers in the world, scoring 39 goals in as many matches in the competition and helping Manchester City secure their first Champions League title in the 2022-23 season.
Looking ahead, Manchester United will face Brentford on Saturday, while Erling Haaland and Manchester City will be eager to bounce back after a shock defeat to Wolves when they face RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
