PGMOL Announces Updates to VAR Communication Protocols

Following the release of the audio recording of the failed VAR decision in Liverpool’s match, which led to a legitimate goal being disallowed, the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) has announced changes to the communication protocols between the VAR team and on-field referees.

The statement from PGMOL outlined the key learnings from the review of decision-making processes and emphasized the need for efficiency without compromising accuracy. The following changes will be implemented:

1. A new VAR Communication Protocol will be developed to improve the clarity of communication between the referee and the VAR team regarding on-field decisions.

2. As an additional step in the process, the VAR will confirm the outcome of the VAR check with the AVAR (Assistant Video Assistant Referee) before confirming the final decision to the on-field officials.
