The Boston Celtics’ attempt to acquire NBA star Jimmy Butler included two expensive first-round picks, resulting in Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum

Back in 2016 and 2017, when Danny Ainge was the head of the Boston Celtics and Jimmy Butler played for the Chicago Bulls, there were attempts to trade for Butler.

Ainge mentioned on the podcast “Knuckleheads,” which is hosted by former NBA players Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles, that the Bulls had expressed interest in obtaining the draft picks that the Celtics subsequently transformed into Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum in return for Jimmy Butler. Brown and Tatum are currently playing for the Celtics.

In the 2016 NBA Draft, the Celtics selected Jaylen Brown with the third overall choice. The following year, in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Celtics selected Jayson Tatum with the third overall pick. In spite of this, the Chicago Bulls ultimately parted ways with Butler during the 2017 draft and sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of a deal that also includes Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine, and Lauri Markkanen.
