Liverpool Faces Potential FA Fine Amid VAR Controversy in Tottenham Defeat
Liverpool could be hit with a hefty FA fine in the aftermath of their controversial loss to Tottenham, a defeat that left Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp incensed due to several VAR blunders.
In the match against Tottenham, Liverpool found themselves down to nine men after Curtis Jones received a red card, followed by Diogo Jota’s dismissal for two bookable offenses.
Liverpool’s grievances extended beyond the red cards. A first-half goal by Luiz Diaz was disallowed for offside, and the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) later apologized, acknowledging a “human error” in disallowing the goal. Now, Liverpool potentially faces a £25,000 fine from the FA.
Numerous Liverpool players also received bookings, with Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Virgil van Dijk among them, along with assistant manager Peter Krawietz. Clubs that accumulate five bookings in a single game are typically subject to punishment, which Liverpool met during their match against Spurs.
A £25,000 fine is usually imposed for accumulating six or more bookings in one match, but whether this will be enforced is at the discretion of the game’s governing body.
The circumstances surrounding the bookings could influence the outcome, though any fine would likely further sour Jurgen Klopp’s mood. He was left furious by the refereeing decisions that went against his team.
In his post-match comments, Klopp stated, “I was never more proud of the team than today. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions.”
While Liverpool may potentially face an FA penalty, the officials involved in the decisions against Liverpool have already faced consequences. Darren England, who served as VAR for the game, was replaced as the fourth official for Nottingham Forest’s match against Brentford at the City Ground on Sunday.
