Two VAR referees who made serious mistakes in the Tottenham vs Liverppol match have been suspended by the British Referees Council (PGMOL) from working in the Premier League matches taking place on Sunday and Monday.
VAR once again became the center of controversy in the match between Tottenham and Liverpool in round 7 of the 2023/24 Premier League. The VAR referee duo, Darren England and Dan Cook, made quite a few mistakes.
First, they asked the referee to issue a red card to Curtis Jones for a not too serious foul. After that, these two people did not make the correct decision, causing Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool to be canceled.
An expert later explained that it was due to a misunderstanding between the VAR room referees and referee Simon Hooper. PGMOL later admitted that the decision not to recognize the goal was incorrect.
And the Premier League has now taken action, banning both Darren England and Dan Cook for Premier League matches on Sunday and Monday.
The Times journalist Paul Joyce claims that both men have been substituted for the matches between Nottingham Forest vs Brentford and Fulham vs Chelsea tonight and tomorrow night.
The incident is a blow to the reputation of VAR, which has been criticized after a number of poor decisions since the start of the 2023/24 season. And head referee Howard Webb hopes there will be no more incidents in the near future.
