Tyrone Poole, a former Patriot and two-time Super Bowl champion, was honored this week with an induction into the Black College Alumni Hall of Fame for his accomplishments to the community off the field as well as to Fort Valley State and the NFL.
“As a two-time Super Bowl champion and first-round draft choice, Tyrone’s accomplishments on the field are truly remarkable,” Fort Valley State University’s 10th president, Paul A. Jones, stated during Poole’s induction video. He is a philanthropist, author, speaker, and entrepreneur, but his influence goes far beyond football. Numerous people have been motivated to realize their best potential by Tyrone.
“We are honored to accept this well-earned distinction and to recognize Tyrone’s extraordinary contributions to the water community and FVSU. Tyrone, congratulations.”
Poole finished his college career with 17 interceptions in 42 games and set a school record in the 200-meter dash. In 1995, he was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the 22nd overall pick, becoming the first player in school history to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.
He was a vital component at cornerback for what many would contend was the greatest Patriots defense in franchise history when he signed a free agent contract in 2003 and moved to New England. During the season, Poole intercepted six passes and covered 21 others.
In his filmed acceptance, Poole said, “If you ever see a turtle sitting on top of a fence post, know that that turtle did not get there by itself.” All in all, people, cooperation is what makes the dream possible.
