Cristiano Ronaldo’s legal battle with Juventus over unpaid wages during the Covid-19 pandemic is scheduled for October 4th.
The Portuguese forward is seeking £17.15 million, the net amount he claims the club promised him when he agreed to defer his salary during the lockdown.
In March 2020, with football in Italy suspended, Juventus players collectively agreed to a “salary maneuver.” In 2021, a second deferral was negotiated individually with each player and their agents as the club continued to face financial difficulties.
Ronaldo, now playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has decided to pursue the money owed to him and has requested relevant documents from the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office. Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the legal proceedings will commence next Wednesday.
During his three full seasons with Juventus from 2018 to 2021, Ronaldo scored 101 goals in 134 matches, contributing to two Serie A titles and one Italian Cup victory. He later returned to Manchester United before moving to Saudi Arabia in December the previous year.
This development follows Roma forward Paulo Dybala’s resolution of his compensation dispute with Juventus, where he was owed approximately £2.6 million, and he dropped his lawsuit related to the pandemic compensation.
Additionally, former Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, who is now with Union Berlin, has expressed his intention to pursue legal action against the club, albeit unrelated to this issue.
Bonucci, aged 36, claimed that he was “humiliated” after being excluded from the squad by manager Massimiliano Allegri and forced to train separately from the senior team, which he believed violated his rights.
These legal matters add to the challenges faced by Juventus, which is already dealing with the Prisma investigation into alleged false accounting.
This investigation encompasses inflated player transfer values, undisclosed salary arrangements with players, and potentially suspicious partnerships with other clubs and agents. In the previous season, Juventus was docked 10 points due to accounting irregularities, leading to their failure to secure a place in the Champions League.
