Liverpool Secures EFL Cup Fourth Round Spot with 3-1 Comeback Victory Over Leicester City
Liverpool secured their place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a thrilling 3-1 comeback win against Championship leaders Leicester City at Anfield.
Leicester took an early lead in the third minute through Kasey McAteer after a brilliant counter-attack that followed Kostas Tsimikas’s loss of possession.
Despite trailing at halftime, Jurgen Klopp’s team mounted an impressive response in the second half. Goals from Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Diogo Jota secured Liverpool’s passage into the last 16 of the competition.
Liverpool dominated possession from the start, but it was Leicester who stunned the home crowd with an early goal.
Klopp’s halftime words seemed to have an immediate effect as Gakpo found the net in the 48th minute, leveling the score. Just five minutes after coming on as a substitute, Szoboszlai unleashed a thunderous shot into the top-left corner, giving Liverpool the lead.
Despite having the advantage, Liverpool remained vulnerable in transition, with Wilfred Ndidi running through on goal before being stopped by Liverpool’s defense.
Liverpool sealed their place in the fourth round in the 89th minute when center-back Jarell Quansah shrugged off James Justin, passed to Jota, and the Portuguese forward executed a delicate finish to secure the win.
Liverpool has now won their last four matches by a score of 3-1 and will aim to extend their unbeaten streak when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday.
Leicester City’s focus now shifts to the Championship until January after their EFL Cup exit, with an upcoming match against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.
