Liverpool Secures EFL Cup Round Four Berth with Remarkable 3-1 Comeback Victory Against Leicester City
Liverpool has clinched a place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup with an impressive comeback win over Championship leaders Leicester City at Anfield.
Leicester took an early lead in the third minute through Kasey McAteer, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack following a turnover by Kostas Tsimikas.
Despite trailing at halftime, Jurgen Klopp’s squad delivered an impressive response in the second half, with goals from Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Diogo Jota securing their passage to the last 16 of the competition.
Liverpool dominated possession from the start, but Leicester stunned the home crowd with their early goal.
Klopp’s halftime talk seemed to have a profound impact as Gakpo found the net in the 48th minute, leveling the score. Only five minutes after coming on as a substitute, Szoboszlai unleashed a powerful shot into the top-left corner, giving Liverpool the lead.
Even with a lead to protect, the Premier League side appeared vulnerable in transition, with Wilfred Ndidi making a threatening run before being stopped by Liverpool’s defense.
Liverpool sealed their place in the fourth round in the 89th minute when center-back Jarell Quansah shrugged off James Justin to set up Jota, who produced a delicate flicked finish that found the Leicester net.
Liverpool has now won all of their last four matches by a 3-1 scoreline and will aim to extend their unbeaten start to the season to nine matches when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday.
Leicester City, on the other hand, will focus solely on Championship matters until January after their elimination from the EFL Cup at Anfield. The Championship leaders are set to face Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon.
