‘Wasting too many opportunities’ – Oriol Romeu criticized Barcelona’s poor performance in the 2-2 draw against Mallorca

At Estadi Son Moix on Tuesday night, Barcelona played RCD Mallorca in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw. It was Barcelona’s first game of the 2023–2024 season, and it was also the first game in which they suffered their first loss.

After falling behind early in the match but tying it up thanks to Raphinha, Barcelona then found themselves trailing again right before the halftime break.

However, a goal scored by Fermin Lopez in the second half ensured that the La Liga champions did not leave Palma empty-handed. Lopez’s goal was the equalizer.

Oriol Romeu is dissatisfied with Barca’s recent showings.

After the match, Barca manager Xavi Hernandez discussed how his team’s defensive errors contributed to their loss to Mallorca and how Barca should accept responsibility for their own fate.

Oriol Romeu, who plays in the middle of the field, concurred with his manager’s assessment and stated that Barcelona was at fault for handing their opponents an excessive number of scoring opportunities.

“We have suffered more than we wanted to,” Oriol Romeu said. “We have been through a lot.” “We have to improve these games in which our opponents are able to sit back and relax because we are giving them too many chances.”

The player, who is 32 years old, went on to emphasize that Barca needs to find a means to deal with the counterattacks of the clubs that they are competing against, as he said:

“The fact that they can easily counter-attack forces us to run a lot, and it also prevents us from gaining possession in the opposing team’s half.” That is something that needs to be strengthened for the upcoming games.

In the second half, there was a contentious situation in which Barcelona believed that they should have been awarded a penalty for a foul that had been committed on Lamine Yamal; however, the penalty was not awarded despite the fact that the VAR had looked into it.

Romeu responded by saying, “I didn’t see the possible penalty on Lamine Yamal.” This was in reference to the question of whether or not the penalty should have been granted. We have no choice but to show respect for the official if he chooses not to call the foul.
