Pep Guardiola didn’t hold back his criticism following Rodri’s red card against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. He urged Rodri to “control your emotions” and expressed his dissatisfaction with referee Anthony Taylor’s decisions.
City had a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime, with goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland. However, Rodri was sent off early in the second half for getting involved in a scuffle with Morgan Gibbs-White.
Guardiola was particularly frustrated with the inconsistency in the referee’s decisions, noting that a previous incident involving Haaland should have resulted in a yellow card. He also mentioned that he had advised Rodri to be cautious about his emotions during halftime but felt that his advice had been ignored.
Guardiola said, “The referee changed the game. I don’t understand why the first action wasn’t a yellow card, and the first action is a yellow card to us, I don’t understand. With all the yellow cards, the responsibility is not Nottingham Forest or Man City’s, that’s for sure.”
Despite the red card and the controversial officiating, Manchester City managed to secure their sixth Premier League win in as many games, taking a five-point lead at the top of the table.
Rodri will be suspended for the upcoming matches against Newcastle, Wolves, and Arsenal but will be available for the Champions League trip to RB Leipzig.
