‘It’s better to play badly and win than play well and lose’ – Barcelona’s comeback hero spoke after 3-2 victory over Celta

After it appeared like Barcelona would be staring at their first loss of the 2023/24 season, they staged a remarkable comeback to record a 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo. The comeback was successful.

Indeed, Barca was trailing by two goals with ten minutes remaining on the clock, but Robert Lewandowski scored a goal to pull them within one, and he then scored another goal to tie the game a few minutes later. Finally, Joao Cancelo scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute.

The international player from Portugal did not have the best game defensively, but he more than made up for it with his offensive performance, as he provided the assist for Lewandowski’s equalizer and then scored the game-winning goal late in the match.

Cancelo acknowledged to the media that it was not his finest performance, but he reiterated that he would prefer to play poorly and finish up on the winning side. Cancelo played an important part in the comeback victory, and he spoke to the media after the game.

“There is a lot to improve, but it’s better to play poorly and win than to play well and lose,” said the coach. “There is a lot to improve.”

Once again, Cancelo was self-critical of his performance, but he praised the team’s ability to turn a challenging situation around, as he said:

“During the contest, I completely lost my composure. In this game, I made a lot of technical mistakes, which is not my usual pattern. You need to become better and figure out how to turn the situation around, and we have accomplished that.

La Liga: Cancelo pops late in Barcelona's dramatic comeback win against Celta

When asked about the fulfillment of his desire to play for Barcelona, he responded, “This is a dream for me.” I witnessed Barcelona 2009, the greatest football squad in the history of the sport. And as of recently, I’ve joined Barca’s roster as well. It’s unbelievable, and I just can’t bring myself to accept it.

Cancelo claimed that “we can’t look at Real Madrid” when asked about the title fight with Barcelona’s fierce rivals Real Madrid, who have fallen into second place behind Barca as a result of tonight’s match. We have to keep our attention on ourselves and on winning each of our matches. The La Liga is incredibly competitive, and each side has a chance to win against any other.

Cancelo, before bidding goodbye, insisted that in order for Barca to sign him permanently at the end of the season, he will need to continue producing consistently, saying:

If I turn in a good performance, the club will want to keep me, but if I don’t, they will release me. We have no choice but to press on, yet the preceding three ideas are of the utmost significance.
