Lamine Yamal, a promising young player for Barcelona, has had a fantastic beginning to the 2023–2024 campaign.
The offensive prodigy, who is only 16 years old, made his debut with the first team around the conclusion of the previous season. Although it was anticipated that he would play a more prominent role in the senior setup this season, not many people anticipated such a dramatic breakthrough for him.
In point of fact, Yamal has already demonstrated that he belongs at the highest level after playing in only five matches so far this season. He has established himself as a serious contender for the starting slot on the right side, if not the absolute first choice.
The teenage superstar has set some records at the club level over the course of the previous roughly five months. During the most recent international break, he also broke records with the Spanish national team, becoming La Roja’s youngest debutant, starter, and goalscorer ever. He did all of these things during the break.
Yamal has more records in store for him.
If Yamal plays for Barcelona tonight in the UEFA Champions League match against Royal Antwerp at the Montjuic Stadium, he has the potential to add numerous more records to his already impressive resume. Royal Antwerp are the reigning champions of Belgium.
If Yamal plays tonight against Royal Antwerp, he will break the record held by Ansu Fati, who was also a product of La Masia and was 16 years and 2 months old when he made his first appearance for Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. Yamal will therefore become the youngest player in the history of the competition.
Beyond that, Yamal would also become the second-youngest player to play in the Champions League. He would become the youngest player to do so by passing former Anderlecht defender Celestine Babayaro (16 years, 86 days), with only Youssoufa Moukoko of Borussia Dortmund being younger than the Barca prodigy.
If the 16-year-old were to reach the back of the net tonight against Mark van Bommel’s team at Montjuic, he would not only become the youngest goalscorer in the history of the club, but he would also break the record that Ansu Fati now has for the youngest goalscorer in the history of the club.
Additionally, if Yamal were to score in the Champions League, he would break the record for youngest player to score in the tournament’s history, which is now held by Ansu.
It is not out of the question for Yamal to achieve this goal in tonight’s encounter against Royal Antwerp, given how well he has played throughout the first part of this season.
