Man City’s board of directors recently decided to postpone the contract extension negotiation process with midfielder Kevin De Bruyne. They did so because they were not sure about the Belgian star’s health condition.
De Bruyne has been a key member of Man City for many years. However, since the beginning of the season he has only played a total of 49 minutes (in the English Super Cup and round 1 of the 2023/24 Premier League). The player born in 1991 has been absent since early August until now because he is having trouble with his hamstring.
De Bruyne currently has 18 months left on his contract with his parent team. Man City’s board had a plan to retain the former Chelsea midfielder until after the summer of 2025, but now they think it is still too early for the parties to negotiate a contract extension.
According to the Daily Star, Man City’s board wants to wait until De Bruyne fully recovers before discussing signing a new agreement. With Man City’s number 11 player expected to be out of action until early next year, the Premier League champions’ plan is completely reasonable and not difficult to understand.
You should know, even though De Bruyne is recovering from injury, he still regularly “pockets” 375,000 pounds/week. This is a very high salary, so Man City’s Board of Directors cannot risk extending the contract when they are not sure about De Bruyne’s health condition. Only when De Bruyne is completely recovered and ready to play will Man City’s Board of Directors consider the proposal to retain the team’s “conductor” for at least 2 more years that coach Pep Guardiola proposed.
