Manchester United fans voiced their anger at manager Erik ten Hag in Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Brighton, in the first sign the club’s fans could be turning on the Dutchman.

Hojlund, 20, was handed his full debut for United in the match at Old Trafford but things didn’t go to plan for the Denmark international as Brighton claimed a 3-1 win away from home.

After a bright start from United, they fell behind to a familiar face – Danny Welbeck putting the visitors ahead with a well-taken finish.

Hojlund thought he had equalised for United later in the half but his goal was ruled out by VAR, who judged that the ball had narrowly gone out of play in the build-up.

The former Atalanta striker, who joined United in a £72m move from the Italian club earlier this summer, worked hard to find an equaliser in the second half but it was Brighton who would score next – Pascal Gross doubling the visitors’ advantage.

Ten Hag then angered the majority of the home support by bringing Hojlund off for Anthony Martial.

The decision sparked a furious reaction as Old Trafford collectively booed the decision.

Things got worse for Ten Hag minutes later when Brighton went further ahead, Joao Pedro scoring for the visitors to compound the home side’s misery. As was the case with the Hojlund substitution, Pedro’s goal was followed by widespread boos in the stadium.

Thankfully for Ten Hag, United swiftly responded to that goal with substitute Hannibal Mejbri pulling out back with a superb individual effort.

But they were unable to find another as Brighton held on to secure a hugely impressive result.

The result piles the pressure on Ten Hag ahead of United’s opening Champions League game of the season away at Bayern Munich on Wednesday, with United now 12th in the Premier League.

Rasmus Hojlund thought he’d scored his first goal for Manchester United on his full debut for the club against Brighton – only to see it cruelly ruled out by VAR.

Hojlund, 20, joined United in a £72m move from Atalanta earlier this summer but was forced to bide his time to make his first appearance for the club after arriving injured.

He eventually made his debut against Arsenal prior to the international break, coming off the bench as United were beaten 3-1 at the Emirates.

Hojlund was handed his full debut on Saturday for the visit of Brighton to Old Trafford.

But things didn’t go to plan in the first half for Erik ten Hag’s side, who found themselves trailing when former United striker Danny Welbeck finished off a neat move around 20 minutes into the game.

United thought they had found an equaliser five minutes before the break when the impressive Marcus Rashford beat his man and reached the byline, before cutting the ball back for Hojlund to score from close range.

The Denmark international wheeled away in celebration before pumping his fists in the direction of the home fans. But his celebrations were then cut short by a VAR review.

Replays showed that the ball had just gone out of play before Rashford cut it back to the striker, with referee Jarred Gillett ruling the goal out to the delight of the visiting Brighton supporters.

Hojlund had a shout for a penalty turned down later in the half as the Seagulls held on to take the lead into the interval.
