Dr. Helmut Marko Faces Further Scrutiny as FIA Steps In Regarding Controversial Sergio Perez Comments
Dr. Helmut Marko, an advisor to Red Bull Racing, finds himself in an increasingly challenging situation as the FIA takes action regarding his controversial remarks about Sergio Perez. Marko’s comments, which have drawn widespread criticism, inaccurately linked Perez’s South American heritage to a supposed lack of focus, despite the fact that Perez is of Mexican descent, which is distinctly North American.
In his statement, Marko drew comparisons between the focus of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel and that of Perez, stating, “We know that he has problems in qualifying, he has fluctuations in form. He is South American [Sergio], and he is just not as completely focused in his head as Max [Verstappen] is or as Sebastian [Vettel].”
While Marko has since issued an apology, the incident continues to cast a shadow over him and affect the Red Bull Racing team. Now, the FIA has intervened, issuing a written warning to Marko.
A Reprimand from the Governing Body
As reported by motorsport.com, the FIA released a statement in which they indicated that the warning included a reminder of Marko’s “responsibilities as a public figure” within the world of motorsport:
“We can confirm that Helmut Marko has received a written warning and been reminded of his responsibilities as a public figure in motorsport in line with the FIA Code of Ethics.”
Red Bull Racing has not publicly addressed the incident and has refrained from issuing a statement. Team Principal and CEO Christian Horner clarified the team’s stance after Friday’s practice for the Singapore Grand Prix, emphasizing that Marko is “not an employee of Red Bull Racing.”
Horner expressed his disagreement with Marko’s comments and disclosed that Marko had personally apologized to Perez: “Firstly, those comments were not right. Helmut quickly recognized that and apologized for that both publicly and directly to Sergio.”
“He spoke directly to Sergio about it, and I think you’re always learning in life, even at 80 years of age, and inevitably lessons have been learned.”
“He’s not an employee of Red Bull Racing, so in terms of why we didn’t put out a statement, he’s part of the Red Bull wider group, and the Group issued that apology through the Servus TV channel.”
Perez has hinted that he might consider leaving Red Bull if the environment becomes hostile but mentioned that he believes Marko “regrets” his comments, adding that he was not personally offended.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal, also condemned Marko’s comments, emphasizing that they have no place in Formula 1. He stressed the importance of diversity in the sport and noted that such statements undermine F1’s efforts to promote inclusion and diversity.
