Rumors suggest that both Red Bull and Mercedes may be adversely affected by a recent FIA directive

Recent FIA technical directives, specifically TD018, addressing flexi wings, are generating speculation within the F1 community, particularly regarding their potential impact on the performance of Red Bull and Mercedes.

Mercedes could face challenges with their rear-wing performance due to the FIA’s intervention, while rumors suggest that Red Bull’s underbody may also be affected, as reported by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. Multiple sources, including Formu1a.uno, consistently mention Red Bull and Mercedes in relation to this new directive.

An anonymous F1 team boss disclosed to an Italian publication that “many teams will have to make changes” as a result of this directive, which became effective starting from the Singapore Grand Prix.

The technical directive, TD018, is aimed at curbing the use of flexi-wings by teams. It involves increased scrutiny of the design of front and rear wings to prevent competitors from gaining an aerodynamic advantage through the use of flexible components. Concerns have arisen that teams may have concealed unconventional mechanisms beneath rubber coverings, a topic Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, hinted at when he mentioned seeing “rubbery nose boxes.”

While the FIA directive does not specifically target any particular team, there have been suspicions that teams have been attempting to exploit flexible bodywork to gain aerodynamic advantages.

Article 3.2.2 of the directive states that all aerodynamic components or bodywork that affect the car’s aerodynamic performance must be securely fixed and immobile concerning their frame of reference. Any device or construction designed to bridge the gap between the car’s sprung part and the ground is prohibited. Additionally, any car system, device, or procedure that uses driver movement to alter the car’s aerodynamic characteristics is also prohibited.

Regarding which teams might be impacted, both Red Bull and Mercedes have been mentioned in rumors. However, Red Bull’s Christian Horner has asserted that the directive won’t hinder their performance. Mercedes’ Toto Wolff has similarly downplayed the idea of Red Bull suddenly losing their advantage. Aston Martin has reportedly experienced a performance setback due to modifications.

Ferrari, on the other hand, is said to have “no secrets in this area” and is unlikely to require significant changes, according to reports. An engineer pointed out that making adjustments to the underbody, which could involve raising ground clearance, might result in downforce loss and balance issues. Additionally, changes to the front wing could impact the overall aerodynamics of the car.
