Red Bull has been dominating the Formula 1 season, winning race after race, but there is one race on the horizon where they might face some challenges.
As Max Verstappen secured victory at the Italian Grand Prix, the question arose: Could Red Bull win every race this season?
Verstappen’s triumph marked his tenth consecutive race win, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s record for consecutive wins in Formula 1. With each passing race, it’s increasingly plausible that Red Bull could achieve a clean sweep this season. The Italian Grand Prix posed a significant challenge for the team, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz putting up a strong defense against Verstappen, holding him off until the 15th lap.
Sainz’s 14 laps in the lead during the race were the most by any team in a single race in 2023, underscoring the dominance of the RB19, driven by both Verstappen and Perez.
While Ferrari showcased impressive straight-line speed during the race, enabling Sainz to defend vigorously, once Verstappen overtook him, the Red Bull’s overall pace became evident as he pulled away by approximately one second per lap.
In the other Red Bull car, Perez managed to pass both Sainz and his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc to secure second place, resulting in Red Bull’s sixth one-two finish of the season, a record for the team.
Despite their past successes with drivers like Vettel and Webber, Red Bull has never achieved a first and second-place finish in the drivers’ world championship. Perez now holds a 49-point lead over Fernando Alonso in third place, making it likely for Red Bull to secure a one-two finish in 2023.
Red Bull’s performance this season has been nothing short of remarkable. They have won 24 out of the last 25 races, with the sole exception being George Russell’s win in the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix. Their victory at Monza marked their 15th consecutive win, a feat never achieved by any F1 team.
In 2023 alone, Verstappen has secured 12 out of 14 race wins, with Perez winning the other two. Red Bull’s rivals have made sporadic attempts to challenge them, with teams like McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes showing moments of competitiveness. However, the fact that no other team has led more than 14 laps in a race this season underscores Red Bull’s supremacy.
The only potential obstacle for Red Bull to complete a perfect season could be reliability issues or driver errors. However, even in such scenarios, there’s a possibility of the second Red Bull car stepping up to secure a victory.
Looking ahead, some races where Red Bull might face stiffer competition include Singapore, where Mercedes is expected to perform well, and Brazil, a track where Verstappen hasn’t won since 2019 and Mercedes has had success.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix, a new addition to the calendar, remains an unknown factor, with its high-speed layout reminiscent of Monza. Whether it favors Red Bull’s dominant car or Ferrari’s straight-line speed is yet to be seen.
