Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has received praise for his role in Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador last night.
The World Champions once again relied on their talisman, Lionel Messi, who scored a spectacular match-winning free-kick for Inter Miami. In the midst of that, Alexis Mac Allister also had a 77-minute run-out, earning praise from Argentine outlet TyC Sports.
Despite a collectively weak first half, Alexis was hailed as the Albiceleste’s standout player on the pitch. Interestingly, the Liverpool player was shifted into a defensive midfield role, referred to as the ‘5’ position by the Argentinians, where he reportedly thrived.
Playing deeper, Mac Allister was credited with elevating both his own performance and that of his teammates. Despite the acclaim, he received a rating of 6. Regardless, it was a commendable performance by Mac Allister.
It’s still somewhat unusual to see one of Liverpool’s players regularly featuring alongside the legendary Messi. Nevertheless, Alexis Mac Allister continues to earn his place in the team under Lionel Scaloni’s management.
He played for 77 minutes before being substituted for Leandro Paredes. Argentina seemed to struggle in breaking down Ecuador, relying on Messi’s brilliance to secure victory. From a Liverpool perspective, what stands out is Mac Allister’s role. While he started on the left of a midfield trio, it appears he had a better game when deployed as the deepest midfielder.
Interestingly, this is the role he has been playing for Liverpool recently, even after the arrival of Wataru Endo. Perhaps this is where his future lies, both for his club and his country.
