Cody Gakpo has stressed the significance of showcasing his versatility by being open to playing various positions for Liverpool.
At the start of the season, when Liverpool faced midfield shortages, Jurgen Klopp must have been thrilled to have Gakpo as an option. The Dutchman impressed as a left-sided number eight, contributing to a valuable point against Chelsea and a victory over Bournemouth in the opening two games.
Since his arrival in January, fans have become accustomed to Gakpo’s adaptability within Liverpool’s attacking lineup. The Netherlands star arrived on the back of a stellar season and a half with PSV in the Eredivisie, where he excelled as both a left winger and a center forward.
However, in his debut half-season under Klopp, the 24-year-old frequently occupied central positions, even drawing comparisons to Roberto Firmino due to his skill set. In an interview with Voetbal International (via Sport Witness), Gakpo revealed the importance of adaptability based on the team’s needs.
He remarked, “Initially, adjusting to a different position can be challenging, but it’s crucial to adapt quickly and demonstrate my versatility as a player. I simply want to play and contribute, regardless of the position.”
Gakpo continued, “The coach views me as an attacker, but I can also bring attacking elements from midfield. That’s why I also spend time there. Our style of play is dynamic, allowing us the flexibility to change positions naturally.”
He further emphasized that maintaining versatility is essential for personal growth as a player, stating, “Developing myself in various areas aligns with my personality. It’s who I am, and it applies to my development on the field. This also reflects on my identity as a player; it’s crucial for me to become a more complete player.”
This mindset has rapidly made Gakpo a fan favorite, and his quick integration into the club was facilitated by his international teammate and Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk.
Gakpo added, “Everyone at the club provided tremendous support, including Virgil van Dijk, who guided me during my initial days. I am immensely grateful to him.”
Liverpool welcomed another Dutchman, Ryan Gravenberch, on Deadline Day, with a transfer fee of approximately £34 million from Bayern Munich. Both Van Dijk and Gakpo are now available to assist the 21-year-old in settling into life at Merseyside.
