Cody Gakpo Expresses Gratitude to Liverpool Teammate Virgil van Dijk for Assisting His Transition at Anfield
Upon his arrival at Anfield in January, during a challenging period for the Reds, Cody Gakpo could have easily felt overwhelmed and uncertain. However, the 24-year-old Dutchman not only held his own but also gradually made a strong impression. During a recent interview with Voetbal International while away on international duty, Gakpo credited Virgil van Dijk for guiding him through his initial days at Liverpool.
Gakpo stated, “Of course, there is always room for improvement, that’s how I am, but I felt good and I’m having a good time at Liverpool. I came halfway through the season, and then a lot comes your way. Everyone at the club has helped me well, including Virgil van Dijk, who showed me around. I am very grateful to him for that.”
Virgil van Dijk, who has become an even more vital figure at Liverpool following the departures of Jordan Henderson and James Milner, was undoubtedly a crucial reference point for Gakpo when he first joined the club. With Van Dijk now the main man, his leadership and support for Gakpo carry even more significance. As Gakpo continues to settle into Liverpool, he and Van Dijk will also play a role in helping new signing Ryan Gravenberch adjust to life at the club.
While Liverpool initially faced questions about losing their two most senior leaders in the dressing room, it’s important to note that Gakpo served as the captain of PSV Eindhoven at just 22 years old, demonstrating his leadership qualities. With Van Dijk’s guidance and mentorship, it appears that Liverpool has found the perfect individual to support Gakpo during his early days at the club.
