Lisbon (AFP) – Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo expressed his desire to push his limits even further after becoming the first player to score 850 career goals while playing for Saudi club side Al-Nassr.
“I want more,” stated the forward during a press conference before joining the national team for training in Oeiras, just outside Lisbon, ahead of the upcoming European Championship qualifiers.
“As long as I play, I want to set the bar very high. I have to think big,” emphasized the 38-year-old.
Ronaldo celebrated his 200th international cap last June by scoring the only goal in Portugal’s victory over Iceland, maintaining their lead in Group J for Euro 2024 qualifying.
On Friday, the 2016 European champions are set to face Slovakia in Bratislava, followed by a match against Luxembourg three days later at the Algarve stadium in southern Portugal.
“I really want to win these two matches. If we win, we will practically qualify,” noted the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
When asked about his rivalry with Argentina’s Lionel Messi, Ronaldo expressed mutual respect, stating that they both respect each other and believe they have “changed the history of football.”
Ronaldo is celebrating his 20th anniversary in the national team this year and expressed pride in his longevity. “I want to continue because I feel good and useful, but anything can happen,” he acknowledged. For now, he intends to “enjoy the moment” and set the goal of “having an excellent Euro.”
