Over the years, talents from Barcelona have received global recognition in award ceremonies, and it appears that trend will not be stopping anytime soon.
La Masia is the cradle where raw potential is sculpted into diamonds, and Lamine Yamal is one of the latest gems to emerge from its hallowed halls.
Lamine Yamal enters the shortlist for the Golden Boy
As per Mundo Deportivo, Lamine Yamal has been included among the 100 candidates for the Golden Boy 2023 award.
After a meteoric rise to the top, Yamal has blown Europe away with an innately complete skill set that belies his years.
However, this is not the first time a talent from La Masia has gained this kind of recognition at such a young age.
In fact, the Barcelona academy has given rise to many players receiving recognition on award shows. The iconic picture of Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi standing hand in hand at the Ballon d’Or podium remains one of the club’s greatest achievements.
The Golden Boy, which honorus the top under-21 player in European football, already has a tradition of having Barcelona players present. Gavi was crowned the 2022 Golden Boy winner, succeeding Pedri on the podium.
Moreover, Joao Félix, who is currently on loan from Atletico Madrid to Barça, also received this title in the past.
Yamal is not the only candidate from Barcelona
While at the tender age of 16, Yamal’s inclusion in the list comes across as a huge surprise, Barcelona are privileged to possess a couple of other candidates.
Balde and Gavi are the two other youngsters added to this esteemed list, with Gavi currently the holder of the prestigious award.
Balde has been pitched as one of the front-runners for the award after his excellent breakthrough season in 2022/23, which helped the Catalan giants lift La Liga.
But he is sure to receive competition from the likes of Jude Bellingham and Jamal Musiala, who also enjoyed terrific campaigns.
