F1 Eyes Expansion to a New Nation as Plans Advance for Cutting-Edge Street Circuit Venue
Formula 1 (F1) Explores New Territory with Greece’s Stunning Street Circuit Proposal
Formula 1 could be venturing into new territory, as Greece is making preparations for an impressive street circuit to present to the sport’s leadership. The proposed race would be located in Athens, although a specific date for its inclusion in the calendar has yet to be determined.
While F1 has expanded to 34 different countries across various continents, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia in 2021, the most recent additions have primarily been in the Gulf region. The next addition could come from Europe, as reported by Greek publication News Auto.
According to the report, F1 executives have already received a proposal for a Grand Prix to be held in the new Ellinikon metropolitan area, a significant urban redevelopment project led by Lamda Development. Representatives were reportedly impressed by the grandeur of the proposed event, with the Elliniko region offering a combination of Monaco’s coastline and casinos and the vibrant atmosphere of Las Vegas.
However, even if the proposal for the Athens Grand Prix advances through the planning stage, adjustments will be required to fit the race into the existing F1 calendar. The 2024 F1 calendar, recently revealed by F1 and Stefano Domenicali, features a record-breaking 24 races and will test the limits of team members and resources as the sport seeks to expand into new global markets.
Discussing the future of the calendar on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Domenicali expressed his belief that 24 races are the right number for the upcoming season.
