Barcelona could announce key contract renewal after Deco returns from vacation

As relayed earlier today, Barcelona have agreed on a contract renewal with their manager Xavi Hernandez. The Spanish tactician’s current deal is set to expire in 2024, and the renewal will see him tied down to the club for a further two years.

Talks over the extension began months ago, with Joan Laporta explicitly stating that it would be done irrespective of whether Barcelona lifted the league title last season or not.

The Catalans eventually did hoist the silverware, giving the administration more reason to extend their faith in the manager.

Announcement impending?

Now, according to reports from SPORT, an official confirmation of the same is not far away. However, there will be no such movements in the coming week.

The responsibility of closing Xavi’s renewal falls on the shoulders of Deco who is on vacation after the hectic transfer window.

The agreement will thus be sealed and announced once the Catalans’ new sporting director is back in Barcelona in a few days’ time.

New objectives for the season ahead

Barcelona have got off to a solid start to their 2023-24 campaign in terms of results. They have won three of their opening four fixtures and are unbeaten in La Liga.

As the defending champions of Spain, there is pressure on the Azulgranas’ shoulders to play better in the league and retain the crown.

Yet, there are a new set of objectives for Xavi to handle in the new campaign.

Barcelona have had a disastrous record in the UEFA Champions League in recent times, having been knocked out in the group stages for the past two seasons.

With a renewed squad and a relatively easier path to the knockouts this time around, Barcelona must improve significantly with their performance in Europe.
