Piers Morgan made a veiled reference to his infamous interview with Cristiano Ronaldo as he weighed in on Jadon Sancho’s comments about Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, and Morgan, an Arsenal fan, didn’t hold back in criticizing United’s performance. Amidst a disagreement between Sancho and Ten Hag, Morgan placed blame squarely on the Dutchman, alluding to Ronaldo’s explosive talkTV interview, which played a part in the end of Ronaldo’s tenure at Old Trafford.
Morgan stated on talkSPORT, “I think they [Manchester United] are not performing well. I’m sorry to have to use that kind of word at this time of the morning for the more sensitive listeners. I honestly think it is one of the weakest Manchester United teams that has come to Arsenal.
I think back to the glory years of Sir Alex Ferguson, and none of this lot would get into Ferguson’s teams. It got to the stage when Harry Maguire came on, Arsenal fans cheered! There is something inherently wrong with United, and if you look back at my interview with Cristiano Ronaldo, pretty much everything he said about Manchester United, the club, structure, Ten Hag, all of those chickens have come home to roost.
Everything he said was right, and I think if you look at the issue with Jadon Sancho, then this is Ronaldo all over again. Him [Ten Hag] going public and criticizing players. Players deeming he is being misleading about them and then having to go public themselves. It comes a point when Ten Hag needs to look at himself.”
Sancho didn’t make the bench for the match, and Ten Hag explained that it was based on his performances in training. This prompted Sancho to respond on social media, revealing additional reasons for his absence.
Morgan extended an invitation to Sancho to appear on his talkTV show, just as Ronaldo did, saying, “Hi Jadon, come on Piers Uncensored, and I’ll get you out of this Ten Hag nightmare.”
Morgan continued to criticize Ten Hag, suggesting that he is out of his depth as Manchester United manager, particularly noting the team’s struggles against top-half teams away from home since Ten Hag took over. He also praised the way Arsenal is currently managed as a template for how United fans would want their team to be run.
