Against Osasuna on Sunday, Gavi has made his 100th appearance for FC Barcelona, thus becoming the youngest player ever to do so, even earlier in his life than Bojan Krkic.
Important from the start
Gavi made his official debut on 29 August 2021 against Getafe at Spotify Camp Nou under Ronald Koeman, coming on as a substitute for his current captain Sergi Roberto. Not long after he got his first start against Benfica in the Champions League.
On December 18 of the same year he scored his first goal against Elche, eventually totally 47 games in his maiden season, scoring two goals and giving five assists at the age of just 17.
Aged 17 years and 24 days he became the third youngest player ever to play for Barça in the league, with only Krkic and Ansu Fati having started earlier, although he has since been knocked off the podium after Lamine Yamal set a new record when he was a mere 15 years and 290 days.
Gavi’s records
Gavi has started 79 of his first 100 games, which is proof in itself of what an important role he plays in the side. His five goals and eleven assists include one of each in the 2023 Super Cup, when he became the youngest Barça player this century to score and assist against Real Madrid in the same game.
He is also the second youngest player ever to reach 50 appearances for his team in La Liga. Only Iker Muniain of Athletic Club reached the milestone quicker.
There is no question about, ever since the day he played his first senior match, Gavi has proven to be a very special player. Along with his talent, dedication, character and winning mentality, there such a staggering maturity to the way he plays that it’s very easy to forget just how young he is. Barça have a real gem in Gavi, and here’s to the next 100 games. And the next 100 after that…
